The Maine Tucson Concert reviews
E.C. and the Sugarcanes: EXCELLENT!
The Sugarcanes are, much more than a lot of the other material, a cover of Garcia’s “Friend of the Devil”, that really seemed to flow. The Maine’s voice was excellent throughout. Only Van Morrison can boom on like that for hours. There was a lot of strong original material, “Mystery Dance”, “Brilliant Mistake”, and “Good Year For the Roses”. Sometimes it works beautifully as on “My Aim Is True”. As for other covers, the best of which was “Sulphur to Sugarcane” (sp?), “My All Time Doll” was just so-so. The arrangements could have used some work, but that’s really nit-picky…. they were better than decent. Perhaps not ironically, one of their best tunes was “What’s so Funny ‘bout Peace, Love and Understanding” and “Everyday I Write the Book” really lost something essential, especially the latter, which became dirge-like. The Maine kind of what the New Riders of the Purple Sage were to Jerry Garcia, a nice Americana side project, but probably one with a limited shelf life, as the band (all strings except one accordion), despite their technical proficiency, doesn’t have the same intense, soulful, staccato delivery that The Maine does on most of their best material. United Palace is a great venue, very old and funky….. you’d almost think you had been transported back to the Fillmore East….. but the acoustics are not exactly Opera House quality. Still, U.P. really should be hosting a lot more concerts than they do…. highly recommended place. Lower loge tickets have great sight lines and the décor is over the top kitschy. Over all… a MOST excellent evening.
